Bolton
Wanderers Football
Club
Bolton
Wanderers FC
were
founder members of the
football
league,
The club are one of seven
original
members who have never won
English
football's most
prestigious
honour.
Despite never having been
league
champions, Bolton
have managed to finish
third on
three separate occasions.
Bolton's
major success has come in the
FA
Cup, a trophy they have
won on
four
occasions, the last being a 2-0
victory
over
Manchester
United in
1958.
In more recent
times,
Bruce
Rioch and Colin Todd returned
Bolton
to the top flight. As a
management duo,
they took them from 3rd
division
no-hopers to the
Premier
League in just three
seasons. Thanks to
the pair, the
1994-
95 season was a marvellous
time for
The
Trotters. They reached the
Coca Cola
Cup
final which was an
achievement even
if they
were to go on to lose to
Liverpool FC.
They also gained
promotion to the
Premiership
after battling through
in the
play-offs.
In a fantastic final,
they
emerged 4-3 victors over
Reading FC
and
took their place in the top
flight
for the
first time since the year 1980.
However,
Wanderers went into the top
division
under a new manager as a
result
of
Bruce Rioch, being tempted
by the
management
position at
Arsenal. Roy
McFarland took over as
manager but
Bolton suffered in the
Premier
League and went straight
back
down to the Football League
losing
Roy
McFarland his job in the
process. He
was
replaced by Colin Todd, who
took
Bolton
back to the top division as
champions of the
Nationwide League in
1997.
Since that time they have had
a
succession of
managers but have never
managed to secure
English
football's biggest prize.
Bolton Wanderers
hold the
record
for the club to of spent most
seasons
in the top flight, without ever
winning
the league title.
