The
Carling Cup
The
Football League
Cup,
commonly known
as the League Cup (or
Carling
Cup due to it’s current
sponsor), is an
English
football competition.
Similar
to the
FA
Cup, it is played on a
knockout
basis.
Unlike the
FA
Cup where 762 teams
entered in
2008–
09 only 92 clubs can enter the
Carling
Cup. These are the 20 clubs
of
the
Premier
League, and the 72 clubs
of
The
remainder of the Football
League,
which
organises the competition.
Carling
Cup semi- finals are
played
over
two legs. The winners earn
themselves
qualification into the
UEFA
Cup, if they have not
already
qualified for this or
another European
competition in
some other
way.
The winners of the
2008/09 Carling
Cup was won by
Manchester
United. The Red Devils
beat
Tottenham
Hotspur in a thrilling
final at
Wembley
Stadium which ended
after a
penalty
shoot-
out.
