Celtic Football Club
The Celtic Football
Club are a
Glasgow based football
club, and are considered one
of the major football
clubs in the United
Kingdom.
Until the year 1994,
the
club's full name was The
Celtic Football and Athletic
Company Ltd,
whilst outside of Scotland
they are often referred to as
Glasgow Celtic.
Celtic play their home
fixtures at Celtic Park
Stadium which has a capacity
of 60,832, making it the
largest football stadium in
Scotland (and the third
largest in the UK, behind
Wembley and Old Trafford).
Together with their
fierce rivals, Glasgow
Rangers, they form what has
become known as the “Old
Firm” which is one of the
most famous and most bitter
rivalries in sports
today. Celtic has
traditionally been linked with
its Irish roots which
originate from the Irish
immigrant community in
Glasgow.
Celtic are the only
club
ever to win the European
Cup (or Champions League as
it is today) with a
team composed entirely of
home grown players.
All of the players in the
side were Scottish lads,
and all were born within a 30
mile radius of Celtic
Park Stadium. The team
became known as the “Lisbon
Lions”. Celtic once again
reached the European Cup
final in the year of 1970,
sadly they were beaten
by Feyenoord in extra
time. In the 2003 season,
Martin O'Neill led the team
to the UEFA Cup final in
Seville, Spain where they lost
the match 3-2 to F.C.
Porto after a close fought
90 minutes plus extra time.
Almost 80,000 Celtic
supporters travelled to
Spain for the final, which was
believed by UEFA to
be the largest ever foreign
travelling
support.
The club's
traditional
playing colours are green
and white hooped shirts, with
white shorts & white
socks (this also stems from
the Irish roots of the
club).
Celtic Football Club
have
an estimated fan base of
around nine million supporters
world-wide.
