Liverpool Football Club Liverpool FC were formed as a result of a dispute between Everton FC and their stadiums owner at the time, Mr John Houlding. The disagreement caused most Evertonians to leave Anfield and set up home at near by Goodison Park, whilst Mr Houlding was forced to establish a football team of his very own. The result was the formation of Liverpool FC (originally known as Liverpool Association FC) which were founded during March of 1892. Liverpool FC have gone on to become English footballs most successful clubs with 18 Championship wins. The platform for Liverpool’s success was undoubtedly Bill Shankly who took over as the manager of the team in 1959 whilst they were playing their football in division 2. Within 3 seasons they had gained promotion to the top division. Shankly then went on to win 3 League Championships, 2 FA Cup’s and also the clubs first European honour the UEFA Cup, before handing the reigns over to Bob Paisley in 1974. Although Bill Shankly was a hard act to follow, Paisley proved to be an even more successful manager as Liverpool went on to dominate English football during the 70’s and 80’s. His greatest achievement though was in European football as once again Liverpool lifted the UEFA Cup in 1976 before becoming only the second English team ever to win the European Cup (the equivalent of today’s Champions League) in 1977 by beating Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-1. After a period of under- achieving during the 1990’s, Liverpool are back amongst the big boys and have been extremely successful under current manager Rafael Benitez, who during only his first season, managed to secure the Champions League trophy once again for the club after a dramatic final against Italy’s formidable AC Milan. Liverpool finished a fantastic 2nd in the Premier League last season and will be hoping to improve on that this term by lifting the Premiership trophy for the first time.
